Government Imposes Airfare Caps as IndiGo Flight Disruptions Continue

Civil Aviation Ministry acts to curb surging ticket prices as IndiGo cancellations disrupt travel across India.

New Delhi, Dec 6: The government on Saturday introduced airfare caps following a spate of IndiGo flight cancellations that led to a sharp rise in ticket prices on several routes.

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has cancelled hundreds of flights over the past five days, primarily due to crew-related issues, leaving passengers stranded and driving up fares on affected routes.

In response, the civil aviation ministry invoked its regulatory powers to ensure that airfares remain fair and reasonable. The fare caps will remain in effect until flight operations return to normal.

“An official directive has been issued to all airlines mandating strict adherence to the newly prescribed fare caps,” the ministry said in a statement.

Details of the specific limits for each route are yet to be released, but the move is aimed at protecting passengers from excessive pricing during the ongoing disruptions.
