Government Reduces 307 House Physician Posts, Adds 121 Senior Resident Positions, AIMSA Calls Decision ‘Unfair’
AIMSA decries move as “unfair,” warns of reduced opportunities for MBBS graduates in government hospitals
JAMMU, Oct 10: The Jammu and Kashmir government has created 121 new posts of Senior Residents and Tutors in Government Medical Colleges (GMC) Srinagar and Jammu by abolishing 307 existing posts of House Physicians and House Surgeons, prompting criticism from the medical community.
According to Government Order No. 663-JK (HME) of 2025, issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, 54 Senior Resident/Tutor posts have been created in GMC Srinagar by cutting 137 House Physician/House Surgeon positions, while GMC Jammu will see 67 new Senior Resident/Tutor posts at the cost of 170 House Physician/House Surgeon positions. The order follows a Council of Ministers’ decision dated September 23, 2025.
The move has sparked strong opposition from medical students. All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) Vice President Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan called the decision “really unfair.” He said, “The government has cut 307 House Physician posts to create 121 Senior Resident posts, a net loss of 186 jobs. This kills MBBS job opportunities.”
Dr. Khan urged the administration to reconsider the decision, warning that it would negatively affect hundreds of MBBS graduates awaiting short-term postings and clinical training in government hospitals.
