Srinagar, Feb 23: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced on Sunday that the government is in discussions with private investors to bolster the skiing infrastructure at Gulmarg, one of India’s premier winter tourism destinations.
Speaking to reporters at the picturesque hill station in Baramulla district, Abdullah emphasized the government’s commitment to improving facilities for adventure tourism. “We are in talks with some private investors who have expressed interest in developing Gulmarg’s skiing infrastructure. If we receive a solid proposal that aligns with our vision for sustainable tourism, we will take it forward,” he stated.
The Chief Minister further revealed that a helicopter service would now be operational year-round in Gulmarg, offering both heli-skiing and scenic aerial tours. “Despite lower-than-expected snowfall this season, skiing enthusiasts are still enjoying the slopes. Starting today, heli-skiing will commence, and for the first time, a helicopter will be available throughout the year for both skiing and helicopter safaris, allowing visitors to experience Gulmarg’s breathtaking beauty from the skies,” he added.
Abdullah also highlighted ongoing efforts by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation to expand cable car facilities in the region. The government, he said, is actively exploring new projects to enhance accessibility and attract more tourists to the scenic valley.
On the delayed Khelo India Winter Games, which were originally scheduled to begin on February 22 but were postponed due to insufficient snowfall, the Chief Minister said that no final decision had been made regarding new dates.
“We are expecting fresh snowfall over the next three days starting February 26. Following this, experts from the Ski Federation will assess the slopes. If they determine that there is enough snow to host the games, we will announce new dates. Ideally, I would like the event to be held in the first week of March, as rising temperatures beyond that period could make it difficult,” he explained.
Responding to a question about preparations for the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Abdullah assured that the administration would soon hold a review meeting to ensure smooth arrangements.
