Harmanpreet Kaur Scripts WPL History, Becomes First Indian to Cross 1,000 Runs

MI captain becomes first Indian to cross 1,000 WPL runs, powers seven-wicket win over Gujarat Giants

India, Jan 14 : Mumbai Indians continued their strong run in the Women’s Premier League with a commanding seven wicket victory over Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday, riding on a historic knock from skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.

Harmanpreet etched her name in the record books by becoming the first Indian batter  and only the second overall after Nat Sciver Brunt  to cross 1,000 runs in WPL history. The MI captain delivered a match-winning 71 off 43 balls, laced with seven fours and two sixes, as Mumbai chased down a daunting target of 193.

Anchoring the innings with composure, Harmanpreet stitched vital partnerships with Amanjot Kaur and Nicola Carey, registering her 10th fifty-plus score in the league the most by any player in WPL history. Her knock guided MI to the second-highest successful run chase in WPL, behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 202 run chase against Gujarat Giants last season.

With this win, Mumbai Indians extended their perfect record against Gujarat Giants, winning all eight encounters between the two sides  the only 100 per cent head-to-head record in the tournament.

Harmanpreet now leads the list for fifty-plus scores in WPL with 10, ahead of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Meg Lanning, who have nine each. She has accumulated 1,016 runs in 30 matches at an impressive average of 46.18 and a strike rate of 146.18.

Her dominance against Gujarat Giants continued, with 422 runs against them at a staggering average of 84.4 and a strike rate of 176.56, including five half-centuries. In run chases overall, Harmanpreet has been exceptional, scoring 432 runs in 12 innings at an average of 72.

After being named Player of the Match, Harmanpreet praised her teammates, particularly the youngsters, for stepping up when needed.

“Good to see all these girls taking responsibility and doing their bit for the team. They are always ready to do whatever the team requires,” she said, adding that preparation and execution were key to chasing big totals.

The victory marked Mumbai Indians’ second consecutive win in WPL 2026, lifting them to second place on the points table after earlier wins over Delhi Capitals, following their season-opening loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
