02-03-2023 : In the Hathras rape and murder case, one accused was convicted while three were acquitted by a special court in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. Accused Ramu, Lavkush, and Ravi were acquitted, while accused Sandeep was found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and offences under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The 19-year-old Dalit girl was gang-raped and attempted to be killed by the accused on September 14, 2020, and she later succumbed to her injuries at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on September 29. The forced cremation of the victim’s body by the UP Police and administration without the family’s consent or presence had also sparked outrage.
The Allahabad High Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the case, and subsequently, the CBI had filed a charge-sheet against all four accused men in December 2020. Several public interest litigations were also filed before the Supreme Court seeking independent, monitored probe and witness protection, among other reliefs.
