Himachal Pradesh Expands Medical Education to Address Faculty Shortage

Retirement age extended and postgraduate seats increased to strengthen healthcare system

Himachal, Apr 09 : In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a series of reforms aimed at strengthening medical education and addressing faculty shortages. The initiative includes increasing postgraduate medical seats and extending the retirement age of professors.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu declared that the retirement age of medical professors will be raised to 65 years for the next three years. This move is expected to address the acute shortage of experienced faculty, particularly in newly established medical colleges.

Additionally, the government has approved the expansion of postgraduate seats across multiple institutions, with a total increase of over 300 seats. This step aims to improve the availability of specialized doctors and enhance patient care services in the state.

The state has also committed to filling vacant nursing and technical positions, along with investing heavily in modern medical equipment and infrastructure. Financial allocations running into thousands of crores have been earmarked for the development of medical colleges and healthcare facilities.

These reforms are expected to improve both education and healthcare delivery, while also positioning Himachal Pradesh as a hub for medical excellence and health tourism.
