Himachal Pradesh to Introduce Education Loan Scheme for Underprivileged Students at 1% Interest

20,000 Meritorious Girl Students in Himachal Pradesh to Get Rs 25,000 Subsidy for Electric Scooties

10-04-2023 : The Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, recently announced the launch of the ‘Mukhyamantri Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojna,’ a scheme aimed at providing education loans at a low interest rate of 1% to underprivileged students pursuing higher and professional studies in the state. The scheme is expected to offer financial assistance to families with an annual income of less than Rs 3 lakh, with an allocation of Rs 200 crore for the current financial year.

The loans will be provided through financial institutions or banks and will cover tuition fees, accommodation, books, and other related expenses for students pursuing professional courses such as engineering, medical, management, Ph.D. courses, and more. The scheme’s primary objective is to ensure that no poor child in the state is deprived of higher and professional education for want of financial resources.

The scheme is also expected to instill a sense of responsibility among the beneficiaries so that they have the motivation to achieve their aim. Sukhu stated that the low-interest rate is meant to encourage students to repay the loans on time and take responsibility for their education.

In addition, the scheme includes a subsidy of Rs 25,000 to be provided to 20,000 meritorious girl students above 18 years of age, studying in government institutions, to purchase electric scooties. The move is intended to encourage girl students to pursue higher education and to help develop Himachal Pradesh as a “green state.”

Overall, the launch of the ‘Mukhyamantri Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojna’ is expected to provide much-needed financial support to underprivileged students pursuing higher and professional education in the state of Himachal Pradesh. By making education loans accessible to those who might not otherwise have the financial means to pursue higher education, the scheme has the potential to empower these students and help them achieve their dreams.
