Himanta Biswa Sarma Alleges “Political Design” Behind CBI Probe Request in Zubeen Garg Death Case

Assam CM questions coordinated demands for central investigation, hints at political motives amid high-profile singer’s demise

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised concerns over what he described as a “coordinated” push for a CBI investigation into the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg, suggesting the timing and alignment of these demands may have a political motive.

Speaking in a Facebook Live session, Sarma highlighted recent calls from event manager Shyamkanu Mahanta, Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia, and Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi, all seeking that the investigation be moved from the Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“Of late, Shyamkanu Mahanta, INC Assam, and Akhil Gogoi are all making the same demand  that they don’t trust Assam Police and a central agency must probe the demise of beloved Zubeen. Is it a coincidence that all these characters are speaking in one voice?” Sarma asked.

While emphasizing that individuals are free to pursue justice through legal channels or public campaigns, he added, “Sometimes it is a coincidence, sometimes it is deliberate,” hinting at a possible “political design” behind the simultaneous calls.

Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated singers, passed away in Singapore last month, triggering widespread grief across the state and national discourse. His death quickly became a political flashpoint, with allegations, speculations, and calls for impartial probes dominating public conversation.

The Assam government had formed a Special Investigation Team under the state CID to probe Garg’s death, but skepticism persists among political leaders and cultural figures. Shyamkanu Mahanta, a close associate of Garg, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking protection of his rights amid the ongoing investigation.

Opposition leaders argue that only a central agency like the CBI can ensure credibility in a case involving a figure of Garg’s stature, who transcended political and ethnic divides.

As the SIT continues its investigation, the growing chorus for a CBI inquiry has introduced a new layer of political intrigue to a case that continues to capture public attention across Assam and beyond.
