29-11-2023 : The United National Liberation Front (UNLF), the oldest armed group operating in the Imphal valley of Manipur, signed a historic peace agreement with the Indian government on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s trajectory towards lasting peace. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this breakthrough, hailing it as a “historic milestone” and underscoring the relentless efforts of the Modi government in fostering permanent peace in the Northeast.

The UNLF, known for its prolonged armed movement in Manipur, has now committed to renouncing violence and transitioning into mainstream society. Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his jubilation over this achievement in a post on X, emphasizing the importance of the peace agreement. “A historic milestone achieved!!! Modi govt’s relentless efforts to establish permanent peace in the Northeast have added a new chapter of fulfillment as the United National Liberation Front signed a peace agreement today in New Delhi,” Shah stated.

Highlighting the significance of the occasion, Shah welcomed the UNLF into the democratic fold, expressing optimism for their journey toward peace and progress. He conveyed his best wishes to the group as they embarked on this transformative path. The peace agreement with the UNLF, according to Shah, marks the culmination of a six-decade-long armed movement, bringing an end to a chapter of historical conflict.
