Eight players shortlisted for the ICC Player of the Tournament award ahead of the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad India’s Jasprit Bumrah not included, while Sanju Samson remains the lone Indian nominee.
India, Mar 06 : The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced the ICC Player of the Tournament nominees for the ongoing T20 World Cup, with eight cricketers making the shortlist ahead of the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Notably, India’s premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was not included among the contenders, while wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson emerged as the only Indian on the list.
Will Jacks leads England’s campaign
England all-rounder Will Jacks has been one of the tournament’s most impactful players, contributing with both bat and ball. Batting lower down the order, Jacks has scored 226 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 176.56 — the highest tally by a No.6 or lower batter in a single T20 World Cup edition. He also picked up nine wickets and earned four Player of the Match awards. In the semifinal, he removed key Indian batters Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
Sahibzada Farhan powers Pakistan’s batting
Pakistan opener Sahibzada Farhan carried much of the responsibility for his side’s batting unit. The right-hander amassed 383 runs in seven innings at an impressive average of 76.60 and a strike rate of 160.25. During the tournament, Farhan surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for most runs in a single T20 World Cup edition and also registered two centuries.
Lungi Ngidi shines with the ball
South Africa pacer Lungi Ngidi emerged as his team’s leading wicket-taker, claiming 12 wickets in seven matches at an average of 15.58. With an economy rate of 7.19, Ngidi’s slower deliveries troubled opposition batters throughout the competition. His standout performance included conceding just 15 runs in four overs against India.
Aiden Markram leads from the front
South African captain Aiden Markram also made the shortlist after delivering key performances with the bat. He scored 286 runs in eight innings at an average of 47.66 and a strike rate of 165.31. Among his best knocks were unbeaten 86-run innings against New Zealand and West Indies. Markram also chipped in with a wicket during the Super 8 clash against India.
Rachin Ravindra impresses with spin
New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra has been more effective with the ball than the bat in this tournament. The left-arm spinner has taken 11 wickets in six opportunities, maintaining an impressive average of 10.63 and an economy rate of 6.88. He has also added 128 runs with the bat, providing useful contributions for the BlackCaps.
Shadley van Schalkwyk emerges as surprise package
USA pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk has been one of the tournament’s biggest revelations. Despite his team exiting in the group stage, the 37-year-old finished as a joint highest wicket taker with 13 wickets in just four matches. His exceptional average of 7.76 and economy rate of 6.80 included four-wicket hauls against both India and Pakistan.
Tim Seifert delivers consistent runs
New Zealand opener Tim Seifert has been a steady performer at the top of the order. The wicketkeeper batter has accumulated 274 runs in seven innings at an average of 45.66 and a strike rate of 161.17, including three half-centuries. His crucial fifty against South Africa in the semifinal helped set up the run chase alongside Finn Allen.
Sanju Samson the lone Indian nominee
India’s Sanju Samson joined the tournament midway but made an immediate impact in the knockout stages. After replacing an unwell Abhishek Sharma, Samson played valuable cameo innings before delivering a match-winning unbeaten 97 against West Indies in a crucial encounter. He followed it with an 89-run knock against England, helping India post a commanding total. From four innings, Samson has scored 232 runs at a remarkable average of 77.33 and strike rate above 200.
With the final approaching, fans will now await the announcement of the winner of the ICC Player of the Tournament nominees race, recognising the most outstanding performer of the competition.
