Iconic Character Actor Junior Mehmood Passes Away at 68 After Battling Cancer, Leaving Behind a Cinematic Legacy
08-12-2023 : Renowned character actor Junior Mehmood, celebrated for his memorable roles in classic Bollywood films like “Caravan,” “Haathi Mere Saathi,” and “Mera Naam Joker,” passed away at the age of 68 after a brave battle with cancer. His close friend Salaam Kazi confirmed the sad news, revealing that Junior Mehmood, whose real name was Naeem Sayyed, breathed his last at 2:00 am at his residence in Bandra. The actor had been grappling with breathing issues since Thursday night, ultimately succumbing to the health challenges.
Junior Mehmood’s illustrious career began as a child artist with films such as “Mohabbat Zindagi Hai” (1966) and “Naunihal” (1967). His association with the iconic Mehmood, who bestowed upon him the name “Junior Mehmood” after their collaboration in the 1968 film “Suhag Raat,” marked a significant chapter in his journey in the Indian film industry.
The actor’s health struggles came to light when he started experiencing stomach pain, leading to a local doctor’s consultation. However, as he began to lose weight, his family decided to seek further medical attention at Tata Memorial Hospital. The subsequent diagnosis revealed cancer in his lung and liver, along with a stomach tumor. Additionally, he was diagnosed with jaundice, compounding the severity of his health condition.
Notable figures from the film industry, including actors Jeetendra and Sachin Pilgaonkar, paid a visit to Junior Mehmood’s residence on his request earlier in the week. Jeetendra, who had shared screen space with the late actor in movies like “Suhaag Raat” and “Caravan,” joined in expressing condolences.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Junior Mehmood graced the silver screen in over 260 films across seven languages. His filmography includes classics like “Brahmachari,” “Kati Patang,” “Hare Raama Hare Krishna,” “Geet Gaata Chal,” “Imaandaar,” “Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri,” “Aaj Ka Arjun,” “Gurudev,” “Chhote Sarkar,” and “Judaai.”
In addition to his cinematic contributions, Junior Mehmood also made appearances on television, featuring in shows such as “Pyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara” and “Ek Rishta Saajhedari Ka.”
The late actor is survived by his wife and two sons, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of Indian entertainment.
