IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Nine Tamil Nadu Districts

Easterly wave over southwest Bay of Bengal likely to trigger intense rainfall, thunderstorms and warmer nights.

CHENNAI, Jan 25: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday issued a warning for heavy rainfall in nine districts of Tamil Nadu, cautioning residents as unstable weather conditions are expected to continue over the next couple of days.

According to the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre, an easterly atmospheric wave over the southwest Bay of Bengal is driving the current spell of rain, with several parts of the state likely to witness widespread precipitation.

The IMD said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in districts including Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Salem and Namakkal. Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Ramanathapuram may also experience spells of intense rain during the day.

Officials warned that thunderstorms and lightning could occur at isolated locations, raising the possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruption to road traffic. Farmers and residents in vulnerable regions have been advised to take precautionary measures and remain alert.

For Chennai and its suburban areas, moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected at several places, which may cause temporary inconvenience, especially during peak hours.

The weather department said moderate rainfall may persist across Tamil Nadu on Monday, with intensity likely to ease in some interior districts. No fog conditions have been forecast anywhere in the state during this period.

Meanwhile, minimum temperatures across Tamil Nadu are expected to rise by up to three degrees Celsius above normal, leading to relatively warmer nights. Fishermen have been advised to keep a close watch on weather updates as sea conditions over parts of the Bay of Bengal may remain unsettled.
