IMD Warns of Intensifying Heatwave as Temperatures Surge Across India

Advisory urges precautions as extreme heat conditions intensify in multiple parts of the country

NEW DELHI, Apr 25: As temperatures continue to rise sharply across several regions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued a comprehensive set of heatwave advisories, cautioning citizens to take preventive measures against extreme weather conditions.
According to officials, the advisory highlights the importance of minimizing exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during peak afternoon hours. Citizens have been urged to remain well hydrated, wear loose and breathable clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during periods of intense heat.
Special emphasis has been placed on safeguarding vulnerable populations, including children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. The IMD stressed that timely awareness and precautionary steps are essential to reduce the risk of heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
In its latest weather assessment, the department reported that maximum temperatures across large parts of northwest, central, and peninsular India are currently ranging between 40°C and 44°C. The highest recorded temperature stood at 44.5°C in Sri Ganganagar, reflecting the severity of the ongoing heat conditions.
Several regions have recorded temperatures significantly above normal levels, in some cases exceeding the average by more than five degrees Celsius. This deviation indicates a developing heat stress scenario across multiple parts of the country.
The IMD has further warned that heatwave conditions are likely to intensify in isolated pockets of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of central India in the coming days.
Meanwhile, coastal and eastern regions are expected to experience hot and humid weather, adding to discomfort levels, while parts of north India may witness unusually warm nights.
Looking ahead, the department stated that maximum temperatures over northwest India are likely to remain stable until April 27, after which a gradual decline is expected. In contrast, central and other regions may see a continued rise in temperatures before a subsequent easing later in the forecast period.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of staying informed through official weather updates and adhering strictly to safety guidelines as the country navigates this phase of extreme heat.
