In January, Canada added 150,000 jobs

Ottawa, Feb 11 : According to Statistics Canada, there were 150,000 more people employed in Canada in January, while the unemployment rate remained same at 5%. According to the national statistical office, employment increases were mostly led by workers aged 25 to 54, who were equally split between men and women in this group. Workers aged 55 and older also saw an increase in employment, while workers aged 15 to 24 saw minimal change. Gains were seen in a number of sectors, with wholesale and retail trade, health care and social assistance, and educational services leading the way. In addition, the agency reported a loss in employment in the transportation and warehousing industries.

The agency reports that overall hours worked increased 0.8% in January and were up 5.6% on an annual basis. During the reference week, 7.1% of employees missed work due to illness or disability. According to the Xinhua news agency, this was lower than the record-high 10% witnessed in January 2022 and comparable to an usual January.

Just 0.9% of the record-low unemployment rate of 4.9% that was seen in June and July 2022 was observed in January.

According to the agency, there were 1 million unemployed persons overall, which is the same level as has been seen since the summer of 2022.

In January, 63.9% of those without jobs had been out of work for between one and 13 weeks, which is a relatively short period of time. According to Statistics Canada, the percentage of jobless people who had been out of work consistently for 27 weeks or more was 15.8%, down from 19.9% in January 2022.
