India Begin England ODI Series With Dominant Win, Gill and Axar Shine in Birmingham

Captain Shubman Gill leads India’s successful chase against England as Axar Patel delivers an all round performance in the opening ODI

Birmingham: India started their ODI series against England on a winning note after securing a convincing six-wicket victory in the opening match at Edgbaston on July 14. The visitors produced a balanced performance with both bat and ball to take a 1-0 lead in the three match series.

Chasing a target of 259 runs, India reached the required score with more than four overs remaining, finishing at 262 for four. Captain Shubman Gill played a crucial innings of 80 runs before retiring hurt due to cramps, providing stability during the chase.

Axar Patel emerged as the standout performer of the match, contributing significantly in both departments. After restricting England’s batting lineup with four wickets, Axar added valuable runs during India’s chase and played a key role in guiding the team towards victory.

England Collapse After Strong Start

England appeared comfortable at the beginning of their innings after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. However, India’s bowling attack quickly turned the momentum around as the hosts slipped from 61 without loss to 80 for five.

Joe Root and Liam Dawson attempted to rebuild the innings with a crucial partnership. Their efforts helped England recover and post a competitive total of 258 before being bowled out.

India’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, preventing England’s middle and lower order from accelerating in the final overs.

Middle Order Provides Stability for India

India’s chase faced minor setbacks after early wickets, but the middle order ensured there was no major collapse. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar combined effectively to take control of the match.

The partnership between the two all-rounders highlighted India’s growing strength in limited-overs cricket, with both players contributing under pressure.

The victory also gave India confidence after their disappointing T20I series result against England and provided positive momentum ahead of the remaining ODIs.

Gill Highlights Team’s World Cup Preparations

After the match, Shubman Gill praised India’s ability to handle pressure situations and said the team would continue experimenting with different combinations ahead of future challenges, including preparations for the ODI World Cup.

The second ODI of the series will now become important for England as they look to level the contest, while India will aim to continue their winning momentum.
