India Begin Historic 600th Test Against Sri Lanka in Galle

GALLE, Aug 15 : India began their 600th Test on Saturday as they took on Sri Lanka in the opening match of the two-Test series at the Galle International Stadium.
Indian captain Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to bat first, with the team beginning a significant new chapter in the longest format of the game. The historic fixture coincides with India’s 80th Independence Day, adding further significance to the occasion.
India’s Test journey began in 1932, and the Galle encounter makes the country only the third team after England and Australia to reach the landmark of 600 Test matches.
The series is also important for India’s campaign in the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. India currently need strong results in their remaining matches to improve their position in the race for the final.
The visitors head into the contest without pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, while their bowling combination has attracted considerable attention because of Galle’s traditionally spin-friendly conditions. Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and other spin options are expected to play important roles.
Rain had also interrupted India’s preparations on the eve of the match, raising concerns that weather could influence the opening Test.
The Galle Test therefore carries significance beyond the result, combining a historic milestone with India’s efforts to strengthen their position in the current World Test Championship cycle.
