India, Canada Working to Elevate Bilateral Ties to ‘Higher Level’: Jaishankar
EAM holds talks with Canadian counterpart Anita Anand trade negotiations and possible PM Modi visit discussed
UNITED NATIONS, Sep 27: India and Canada are working towards taking their bilateral relationship to a “higher level”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said after meeting Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly session.
Jaishankar described his interaction with Anand as productive, indicating efforts by both sides to strengthen engagement across various areas.
The meeting came days after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi could visit Canada around December this year. Carney also said Ottawa was making progress in negotiations with New Delhi for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the UNGA earlier this week, Carney described India as an important partner in terms of people-to-people ties, security, trade and economic cooperation.
The Canadian leader was responding to questions about the possible timing of Modi’s visit and the status of bilateral trade negotiations.
Jaishankar also held discussions with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Felix Plasencia Gonzalez during his UNGA engagements. He said energy cooperation between India and Venezuela was gaining momentum, while the two sides also exchanged views on other areas of bilateral cooperation and current regional developments.
The External Affairs Minister separately met Belarusian Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov and Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco Alvarez as part of his diplomatic engagements at the UNGA.
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to host the G20 Summit on December 14 and 15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort in Doral, Florida.
