India Co‑Sponsors UN Resolution Condemning Iran’s ‘Egregious’ Attacks on GCC States and Jordan
UN Security Council adopts resolution with 13 votes in favor; condemns Iran’s threats to maritime security and civilian targets
United Nations, Mar 12: India co-sponsored a UN Security Council resolution condemning Iran’s “egregious” attacks on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan, demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities and threats, including attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz. The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favor China and Russia abstained.
The Bahrain-led resolution, co-sponsored by 135 nations including Australia, Bangladesh, France, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UK, and the US reaffirmed support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Jordan. It declared Iran’s attacks a violation of international law and a serious threat to global peace.
The resolution also condemned strikes on residential areas and civilian infrastructure, calling for Iran to immediately refrain from actions threatening regional security. It highlighted the right of nations to protect their vessels under international law and stressed respect for navigational freedoms in key maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandab.
US Ambassador Mike Waltz said the adoption sends a “direct and unequivocal” message condemning Iran’s targeting of civilians. In contrast, Iran’s UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani described the Council’s action as “unjust and unlawful,” defending Iran’s operations as defensive and asserting that allegations of blocking the Strait of Hormuz were “simply untrue.”
The resolution underscores international concern over escalating tensions in West Asia, emphasizes protection of civilians, and calls for Iran to comply fully with international humanitarian law.
