India Launches Nationwide Campaign to Strengthen Antibiotic Stewardship in Hospitals
Health authorities urge responsible use of antibiotics to curb antimicrobial resistance and improve patient safety across healthcare facilities
New Delhi: The Union Health Ministry has launched a nationwide initiative to strengthen antibiotic stewardship across hospitals, aiming to combat the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and promote the responsible use of life saving medicines.
The campaign focuses on improving prescribing practices in both public and private healthcare institutions while encouraging doctors to use antibiotics only when medically necessary. Health officials said the programme is designed to preserve the effectiveness of existing medicines and reduce the emergence of drug resistant infections.
As part of the initiative, hospitals have been advised to establish dedicated antibiotic stewardship committees that will monitor prescription patterns, encourage evidence based treatment and promote regular clinical audits. Medical professionals will also receive updated guidance on the appropriate use of antibiotics for common bacterial infections.
The Health Ministry said antimicrobial resistance has emerged as one of the most significant public health concerns worldwide, making several bacterial infections increasingly difficult to treat. Experts warn that excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics in hospitals and community settings has accelerated the development of resistant microbes.
The campaign includes awareness programmes for healthcare workers, pharmacists and patients, highlighting the importance of completing prescribed treatment courses and avoiding self-medication. Officials emphasised that antibiotics should not be used for viral illnesses such as the common cold or seasonal flu, where they offer no medical benefit.
Hospitals participating in the programme will strengthen infection prevention and control measures, including improved hygiene practices, routine surveillance of resistant organisms and better laboratory support for identifying infections before prescribing medication.
Public health experts welcomed the initiative, stating that coordinated efforts between healthcare providers, laboratories and policymakers are essential to slowing the spread of antimicrobial resistance. They noted that effective stewardship programmes can improve patient outcomes, reduce unnecessary healthcare costs and help preserve critical antibiotics for future generations.
The ministry plans to expand monitoring systems over the coming months by collecting hospital-level data on antibiotic consumption and resistance trends. The information will help authorities identify high-risk areas and develop targeted interventions to improve antibiotic use nationwide.
Officials said the campaign represents another important step in strengthening India’s public health system while ensuring that essential medicines remain effective against serious bacterial infections in the years ahead.
