India Secures Key Positions in Subsidiary Bodies of UN Economic and Social Council

New mandates in science, development, and coordination panels highlight India’s growing influence at the United Nations

India, Apr 09 : India has secured significant representation in multiple subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, reinforcing its active role in global governance and policy shaping. The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations confirmed that the country was elected by acclamation to several important panels for upcoming terms.

India will serve on the Commission on Science and Technology for Development and the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations for the 2027–2030 term, along with the Committee for Programme and Coordination for 2027–2029. These bodies play a crucial role in advancing global cooperation in areas such as innovation, civil society engagement, and programme oversight within the UN system.

In a parallel development, Indian diplomat Preeti Saran has been re-elected to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for the 2027–2030 term. The committee is responsible for monitoring how member states implement key international commitments on social and economic rights.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Development serves as an annual platform for intergovernmental dialogue on issues linking innovation with sustainable growth. Meanwhile, the NGO Committee evaluates applications from organisations seeking consultative status with ECOSOC, ensuring broader participation in global policymaking.

The Committee for Programme and Coordination functions as a central mechanism for reviewing UN programmes and strengthening coordination across agencies. The CESCR, composed of independent experts, oversees adherence to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, which promotes essential rights such as education, healthcare, housing, and employment.

India’s election to these influential bodies underscores its expanding diplomatic footprint and commitment to contributing to multilateral efforts on development, governance, and human rights.
