India, US Resume Trade Talks After Two Month Pause

Delegation visit to Washington expected as both sides review tariff dispute and future trade roadmap

NEW DELHI: After a pause of nearly two months, India and the United States are preparing to restart discussions on key trade issues, with an Indian delegation expected to visit Washington in the coming weeks.

US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, confirmed the development, stating that both countries are looking forward to advancing negotiations. His remarks followed a meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, signaling renewed engagement between the two sides.

Earlier, on February 2, the two nations had announced a bilateral trade arrangement. However, the agreement faced a setback after the US Supreme Court ruled against the imposition of 18% reciprocal tariffs, terming them unlawful. In the interim, the US has enforced an additional 10% duty on imports for a limited period.

The upcoming talks are expected to assess the current situation and explore a way forward, especially as the US administration is yet to clarify its long-term trade strategy. Washington has also initiated a Section 301 investigation covering multiple countries, including India.

New Delhi has reiterated that any agreement must safeguard its competitive position, particularly in comparison to regional economies such as China, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
