Indian-American Community in Boston to Host Grand Independence Day Celebrations
The fifth International India Day Parade will bring together thousands of participants for cultural performances, colourful tableaux and celebrations of India-US friendship.
NEW YORK, Aug 7: The Indian-American community in the Boston region is preparing for a grand celebration of India’s Independence Day, featuring a colourful parade, cultural programmes and events highlighting the longstanding ties between India and the United States.
The Foundation of Indian-Americans (FIA)–New England will organise the fifth International India Day Parade in Boston on August 9. The event is among the prominent celebrations in New England commemorating India’s Independence, cultural heritage and the growing relationship between the two nations.
The 2026 edition will be held under the theme “Festival of Freedom & US-India Friendship”, according to FIA-New England.
The celebration will feature 15 floats and tableaux, along with music and dance performances showcasing India’s diverse cultural traditions. Thousands of members of the Indian-American community from across New England are expected to participate, alongside community organisations, veterans and first responders.
Colonel Inder Preet Singh, a recipient of the Yudh Seva Medal and a veteran, and US Navy Intelligence Specialist Maggie Lehman have been named the Grand Marshals for the event. They will be honoured for their service and dedication to the nation.
Raghuram Sastry, the first Consul General of India in Boston, will attend the celebration as Chief Guest. Organisers said his participation marks an important moment for the strengthening of India-US relations and reflects the expanding role of the Indian-American community in New England.
FIA-New England Executive Director Deepak Rathore said the organisation expects this year’s programme to be its biggest and most vibrant edition so far. He said the celebration would showcase the shared values of freedom, democracy and cultural diversity while reinforcing the close partnership between India and the United States.
The organisers also welcomed a proclamation issued by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey declaring August 15, 2026, as “India Day” in the state. The declaration marks the fifth consecutive year that Massachusetts has officially recognised India Day.
FIA-New England leaders said the annual proclamation has become an important tradition and reflects the significant contributions made by the Indian-American community to Massachusetts.
The festivities will begin with a flag-hoisting ceremony and continue with performances by established Indian dance and music groups. Visitors will also have an opportunity to explore exhibits presented by community and nonprofit organisations.
A vendor marketplace will further add to the celebrations, while the “Festival of Indian Cuisine” will offer attendees a wide selection of traditional Indian dishes representing the country’s rich culinary heritage.
The event is expected to provide a platform for the Indian-American community to celebrate its cultural roots while highlighting the enduring friendship and cooperation between India and the United States.
