Indian Origin Driver Pleads Guilty to Manslaughter in Fatal UK Road Crash
Two elderly victims lost their lives after a high-speed collision on the M4, with the accused now awaiting sentencing following multiple guilty pleas.
LONDON, July 17: A 28 year old Indian origin driver has admitted responsibility for the deaths of an elderly couple following a devastating road collision in west London, bringing a significant development in a case that shocked the local community. The accused, Maninder Singh Brar, entered guilty pleas to multiple serious offences, including two counts of manslaughter, during proceedings at Isleworth Crown Court.
The fatal incident occurred on the night of June 1 along the M4 motorway in Hillingdon, where Brar was driving a black BMW. According to investigators, the vehicle collided with a white Volkswagen Golf carrying three occupants before leaving the crash site without stopping. Emergency services responded quickly, but the impact proved catastrophic for two passengers in the smaller vehicle.
The victims were identified as Mohammad Hagila, 63, and his wife Dil Jan Hagila, 62. Mohammad Hagila died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency medical personnel, while his wife suffered critical injuries and later succumbed in hospital after doctors attempted to save her life. A third passenger, a 29 year old man, sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening or life-changing.
During the hearing, Brar pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter, two charges of causing death while uninsured, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, handling stolen goods, and failing to stop after a road traffic collision. The admissions removed the need for a lengthy trial and acknowledged responsibility for the offences connected to the fatal crash.
The Metropolitan Police described the case as one of immense tragedy, emphasising the irreversible consequences of reckless driving. Acting Detective Inspector Fiaz Janjua, who is overseeing the investigation, said the guilty pleas reflected the gravity of the accused’s actions and the devastating impact they had on innocent victims and their loved ones.
Investigators revealed that officers were alerted to reports of a major collision on the M4 shortly before discovering the damaged Volkswagen Golf. The BMW involved in the crash had reportedly fled the location, prompting an intensive investigation that led to Brar’s arrest on June 6.
Police officials extended their condolences to the Hagila family, acknowledging the immense emotional suffering caused by the incident. Authorities stated that specialist officers continue to support the bereaved relatives as they cope with their loss.
Detective Inspector Janjua stressed that dangerous driving can have lifelong consequences not only for victims but also for families, emergency responders and communities. He noted that the case serves as a powerful reminder of the responsibility every motorist bears while using public roads.
Road safety campaigners have repeatedly highlighted the dangers associated with excessive speed, uninsured driving and fleeing accident scenes. Such offences are treated seriously by UK courts because they undermine public safety and delay emergency assistance for victims requiring immediate medical attention.
Brar remains in custody after his arrest and is scheduled to return to Isleworth Crown Court on August 23, when the court is expected to determine the appropriate sentence for the offences to which he has pleaded guilty. Legal experts suggest the seriousness of the charges could result in a lengthy prison term.
The Metropolitan Police reiterated their commitment to pursuing dangerous drivers whose actions place lives at risk, stating that accountability remains essential in delivering justice for victims and reinforcing confidence in the criminal justice system.
The case has once again drawn attention to the importance of responsible driving and compliance with traffic laws. Authorities hope the outcome will reinforce awareness that reckless behaviour behind the wheel can result in irreversible human tragedy, severe criminal penalties and lasting pain for families left behind.
