India’s Peak Power Demand to Touch 300 GW Next Year, Says Manohar Lal

Power Minister Manohar Lal says the country’s electricity ecosystem must scale rapidly with stronger storage, domestic manufacturing and green infrastructure as demand heads for a new record next year.

New Delhi: India is preparing for a major leap in electricity demand, with peak power consumption expected to touch 300 gigawatts next year, driven by the fast growing footprint of data centres, artificial intelligence-led infrastructure, electric vehicles and wider electrification across sectors, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal said on Wednesday.

Addressing the 12th India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2026 in the national capital, the minister said India’s power sector has entered a new phase in which generation alone is no longer enough. The next challenge is to build a power system capable of handling rising consumption patterns while ensuring that electricity remains available at the right place and at the right time. In that transition, he said, energy storage will play a defining role.

The minister noted that India has already seen an unprecedented rise in electricity demand this year. The country’s peak power demand touched a record 270.82 GW in May 2026, and current estimates indicate that demand has already moved close to 271 GW. With consumption continuing to rise across households, industry, digital infrastructure and mobility, the government is now planning for a significantly higher peak in the coming year.

According to Manohar Lal, India currently has an available capacity of 284 GW, which has enabled the country to meet present levels of demand. However, the changing nature of the economy and the rapid pace of electrification are expected to place fresh pressure on the power system. He said the next phase of growth will be powered not only by traditional industrial expansion but also by energy-intensive digital ecosystems, including hyperscale data centres, AI computing facilities and the growing charging infrastructure needed for electric mobility.

The minister said the rise of these new-age sectors is fundamentally changing India’s power demand profile. Data centres and AI infrastructure require large, stable and uninterrupted electricity supply, while electric vehicles are expected to add a new layer of distributed demand across urban and semi-urban areas. As a result, India must begin preparing now for a power system that can reliably serve 300 GW of peak demand, he said.

He stressed that the country’s energy strategy must now move beyond the old model in which electricity was consumed immediately after generation. With advances in battery storage, pumped hydro and grid-balancing systems, India can increasingly store power and use it later based on need. That shift, he said, will help the country manage fluctuations in renewable generation, improve grid stability and ensure supply during high-demand hours.

Describing energy storage as a national necessity, the minister said it is becoming indispensable for a country that is simultaneously pursuing industrial growth, mass electrification and a clean-energy transition. As renewable energy capacity rises, storage systems will be essential to absorb surplus generation during off-peak hours and discharge it when demand surges. This will help improve efficiency across the power network while reducing the stress on conventional generation sources.

Manohar Lal also linked the future of the power sector to India’s broader environmental commitments. He reiterated the country’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and said the growth in non-fossil fuel capacity over the past decade has laid a strong foundation for that transition. According to him, India’s non-fossil fuel capacity has expanded from 81 GW to 291 GW in just over ten years, reflecting the scale of investment and policy focus in solar, wind, hydro and other cleaner energy sources.

He said the challenge now is to match renewable generation with robust storage and transmission infrastructure so that clean power can be delivered consistently. Without storage, renewable power can remain underutilised during certain hours and unavailable during others. That is why battery systems, pumped hydro projects and modern grid technologies must be developed alongside renewable capacity, he added.

The minister also emphasised the importance of indigenisation in the power and clean-energy value chain. He said initiatives such as “Vocal for Local” and “Make in India” are especially relevant for the energy sector at a time when the world is racing to build capacity in solar manufacturing, battery systems and grid equipment. India, he said, should not remain dependent on imported components for a sector that is central to its economic growth and energy security.

He identified solar cells, battery systems and containers among the key areas where domestic manufacturing needs to deepen. Building local capacity in these segments, he said, would not only strengthen supply chains but also create jobs, reduce import dependence and improve the competitiveness of Indian industry in global clean-energy markets.

On the international front, the minister said India is also working to position itself as a major player in cross-border green energy connectivity. Referring to the “One Sun, One World, One Grid” vision, he said the country is exploring transnational green-energy corridors that can support the exchange of renewable power across regions. Among the ambitious projects under discussion is a proposed 1,600-kilometre undersea electricity cable to the UAE, estimated to cost around Rs 40,000 crore.

He added that India is also examining wider regional energy links with Sri Lanka, Singapore and Europe, as part of a long-term strategy to create a more interconnected green-energy architecture. Such projects, he said, reflect India’s ambition to play a larger role in shaping the future of sustainable energy beyond its borders.

The broader message from the minister’s address was that India’s power transition is no longer only about adding megawatts. It is now equally about how power is stored, moved, integrated and consumed in an economy that is becoming more digital, more mobile and more climate-conscious. He said the coming years would require coordinated investments in storage, transmission, manufacturing, research and regulatory reform to ensure that the energy system remains resilient.

Industry leaders at the event echoed the importance of storage in India’s next growth phase. Vinayak Walimbe, Managing Director of Customized Energy Solutions, said the pace at which India is expanding battery storage is extraordinary. He pointed to a sharp rise in installed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity and said the country has already seen an 11-fold increase this year, underlining the speed at which the market is evolving.

The growth in BESS installations is significant because battery storage is expected to become one of the most important tools for balancing renewable energy, supporting distribution networks and managing peak demand. With solar and wind generation becoming a larger part of India’s energy mix, utilities and grid operators are increasingly looking at battery systems as a way to improve reliability and reduce intermittency.

The scale of India’s storage ambitions was also underlined by Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). He said the country is targeting around 160 GW of storage capacity by 2035, backed by a clearer roadmap for both battery storage and pumped hydro storage. This target reflects the growing recognition that storage will be central to integrating renewable power and maintaining system stability in the years ahead.

Pumped hydro, in particular, is expected to play a critical role in long-duration storage, while batteries are likely to dominate shorter-duration balancing and flexible deployment near demand centres. Together, these technologies are expected to become the backbone of a more dynamic and renewable-heavy electricity system.

The event itself underscored the growing strategic importance of energy storage in India’s policy and industrial landscape. Organised by the India Energy Storage Alliance, the three-day conference is expected to bring together more than 200 exhibitors and over 10,000 industry participants, including policymakers, technology providers, investors and manufacturers. The gathering is seen as a key platform for policy discussions, technical collaboration and business announcements linked to India’s clean-energy transition.

The conference comes at a time when the power sector is facing a dual challenge: it must continue to support one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies while simultaneously aligning with decarbonisation goals. Rising urbanisation, industrial activity, digital services and mobility demand are all increasing the pressure on the grid. At the same time, India is expanding solar and wind capacity at scale, which makes storage and grid flexibility even more important.

Experts say the intersection of AI, data centres, electric mobility and renewable energy will define the next chapter of India’s electricity story. AI and cloud computing are expected to create large new electricity loads, especially as companies expand domestic data infrastructure. Electric vehicles, meanwhile, will gradually transform not just fuel consumption patterns but also power demand distribution across cities, highways and commercial clusters. This means that future planning can no longer rely on old assumptions about when and where electricity is consumed.

That is why policymakers are increasingly focusing on the full power ecosystem — generation, storage, transmission, distribution and manufacturing — rather than treating each segment in isolation. The government’s push for battery manufacturing, domestic solar production, green corridors and long-term storage planning reflects this broader approach.

For India, the road to 300 GW peak power demand is therefore not merely a story of rising consumption. It is also a story of structural transformation in the way the country produces, stores and uses electricity. If managed well, this transition could strengthen energy security, accelerate industrial growth and reinforce India’s position as a major clean energy player in the global economy.

As the minister made clear, the coming decade will test not only India’s ability to generate enough power, but also its capacity to build an energy system that is flexible, storage backed, locally manufactured and globally connected. With demand scaling rapidly and new technologies reshaping the grid, the power sector is entering one of the most consequential phases in its history.
