India’s Services Sector Records Fastest Growth in Four Months as Domestic Demand Strengthens

HSBC PMI rises to 55.8 in October, supported by stronger domestic orders, while subdued export demand and slower recruitment highlight challenges for service providers.

BENGALURU, Nov. 4: India’s services sector recorded its strongest expansion in four months during October, supported by improving domestic demand and an increase in new business orders, according to the latest HSBC Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) survey released on Wednesday.

The survey indicated that business activity across the country’s dominant services industry continued to expand, reflecting relatively strong demand from domestic customers despite a slowdown in international orders. However, employment growth remained weak, suggesting that companies were cautious about expanding their workforce amid uncertain global economic conditions.

The HSBC India Services PMI rose to 55.8 in October from 55.2 in September. Although the latest reading was below the preliminary estimate of 56.2, it remained comfortably above the 50-point mark that separates expansion from contraction.

The improvement represented the fastest pace of growth in the services sector since June and highlighted the continuing importance of domestic consumption in supporting India’s economic activity.

New business, one of the key indicators of demand in the survey, increased at its fastest pace since June. The improvement was largely driven by stronger orders from domestic customers, indicating that businesses continued to receive support from activity within the country.

The performance suggests that India’s domestic market remains an important source of stability for service providers at a time when international demand is showing signs of weakness.

Companies operating in different segments of the services industry have been dealing with changing customer requirements, cost pressures and uncertain overseas business conditions. The latest survey nevertheless indicates that demand within India has provided a supportive environment for business expansion.

However, the export performance presented a less encouraging picture. Growth in new international business remained muted, with export orders expanding at a pace matching the weakest level recorded in 45 months.

The slowdown in overseas demand could create difficulties for service providers that depend significantly on international clients. Businesses engaged in information technology, professional services, consulting and other export-oriented activities may face greater pressure if external demand remains subdued.

The contrasting performance of domestic and international orders also highlights the different conditions facing companies operating in India’s services economy.

While local demand has strengthened, businesses dependent on overseas customers continue to face uncertainty surrounding global economic activity and spending patterns.

Employment was another area of concern identified in the survey. Hiring activity almost stalled during October, recording its slowest pace in 10 months and matching the subdued growth rate last seen in June.

The slower pace of recruitment suggests that companies are not increasing staffing levels at the same rate as business activity. Although stronger orders have supported expansion, employers appear to be maintaining a cautious approach towards workforce additions.

Businesses may be seeking to improve productivity and utilise existing employee capacity before committing to additional recruitment. However, continued weakness in hiring could become an important issue if demand remains strong over an extended period.

The employment trend also highlights the difference between rising business activity and the extent to which that growth translates into new job opportunities.

On the pricing front, the survey showed some relief for service providers and customers. Inflationary pressures weakened during October, with prices charged by companies increasing at their slowest pace in four months.

Input cost inflation also eased to its lowest level in more than six years, indicating a moderation in the pressure faced by businesses when purchasing goods and services required for their operations.

Despite the improvement, companies continued to report increases in several operating expenses, including electricity, labour, raw materials and transportation.

These expenses remain important factors influencing the financial performance of service providers, particularly businesses operating with limited pricing flexibility.

The slower increase in selling prices could help companies maintain customer demand and remain competitive. However, the continued rise in certain input costs may limit the extent to which businesses can improve their profit margins.

The latest figures also suggest that companies are operating in an environment where demand conditions are improving but cost management remains essential.

Business confidence, meanwhile, declined compared with September. The index remained below its long-run average, indicating that companies continued to exercise caution while assessing their future prospects.

The moderation in confidence comes despite stronger domestic orders and an improvement in overall business activity. Uncertainty surrounding international demand, employment and operating expenses may be contributing to the cautious outlook.

The survey’s findings also showed an improvement in India’s overall private-sector activity. The composite PMI, which measures performance across both manufacturing and services, increased to 56.2 in October from 55.9 in September.

The reading marked the highest level in four months and indicated that private-sector business activity continued to expand at a healthy pace.

The improvement in the composite index suggests that the services sector and manufacturing activity collectively provided support to the country’s broader business environment.

India’s services industry plays a significant role in economic activity, covering areas such as financial services, information technology, telecommunications, transportation, hospitality, professional services and business support operations.

Its performance is closely connected with household spending, corporate investment, employment conditions and demand from overseas markets.

The latest PMI figures therefore offer an important indication of the direction of economic activity during the beginning of the third quarter of the current financial year.

The stronger performance of domestic orders is particularly significant because it indicates that local customers continue to provide opportunities for businesses despite uncertainty in the international environment.

At the same time, the slowdown in export orders demonstrates that the services industry cannot depend entirely on domestic demand for sustained expansion.

For companies serving international markets, maintaining competitiveness, improving operational efficiency and exploring new business opportunities are likely to remain important priorities.

The employment figures will also require attention in the coming months. A sustained improvement in business activity would normally create opportunities for additional recruitment, but the latest survey indicates that companies have not yet significantly increased hiring.

Similarly, the easing of input cost inflation could provide some support to businesses, although rising expenses in specific areas may continue to affect profitability.

The latest survey presents a mixed picture of India’s services economy: stronger domestic demand, slower export growth, subdued hiring and improving cost conditions.

While the overall expansion remains encouraging, the sustainability of growth will depend on whether domestic demand continues to strengthen and international business conditions improve.

For now, the October PMI reading indicates that India’s services sector entered November with positive momentum, even as businesses remained cautious about the challenges ahead.
