IPL 2026: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Faces ‘Second Season Syndrome’ Test Ahead of New Campaign
Former India pacer says leadership gamble on Riyan Parag could test squad dynamics; warns of tougher challenges for emerging batter
India, Mar 20 : Rajasthan Royals’ decision to appoint Riyan Parag as captain for IPL 2026 has drawn mixed reactions, with former India pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji expressing surprise at the move despite the presence of more experienced names in the squad.
Speaking on JioStar, Balaji described the leadership call as a calculated risk, pointing out that seasoned players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ravindra Jadeja and England all rounder Sam Curran were also available as potential options. He noted that leadership in a high pressure league involves more than tactical calls, emphasizing the importance of earning trust within the dressing room.
According to Balaji, the role presents both opportunity and challenge for Parag. While the responsibility could accelerate his growth, it also demands a careful balance between individual performance and team management. He, however, underlined that head coach Kumar Sangakkara’s experience could play a crucial role in guiding the young skipper through the transition.
Balaji also turned attention to promising batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, cautioning that the upcoming season will test his consistency. After an impressive breakthrough campaign, including a standout century, the youngster is expected to face increased scrutiny from opponents who will be better prepared against him.
He stressed that sustaining form beyond an initial successful season is often the real challenge for emerging players, adding that mentorship from the coaching staff will be vital in helping Sooryavanshi adapt and evolve.
Rajasthan Royals are set to begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati on March 30. The team will then travel to Ahmedabad to face Gujarat Titans, followed by key fixtures against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in early April.
With leadership changes and rising expectations around young players, the franchise heads into the new season with both promise and uncertainty.
