Iran Awaits Official US Response on Hormuz Proposal: Araghchi

TEHRAN, Sept 27: Iran is waiting for an official response from the United States to its proposal for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday, despite US President Donald Trump publicly saying he had rejected the plan.

Araghchi said Tehran had received no formal communication through intermediaries following Trump’s remarks. His comments were published in Iranian media through his Telegram channel.

“We saw the US President’s initial reaction. However, nothing has been conveyed to us through intermediaries,” Araghchi said.

The Iranian foreign minister also pointed to what he described as contradictory statements from Trump, saying Tehran would assess the final message delivered through diplomatic channels before determining its course of action.

“We are awaiting the final position from the intermediaries, and we will make our decisions based on that,” he said.

Araghchi further said any movement toward restoring vessel traffic through the strategic waterway would depend on Washington accepting Iran’s conditions.

The latest development follows Tehran’s announcement that it had presented the US with a seven-day proposal aimed at facilitating the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway remains a major route for global energy shipments, and its closure has disrupted the movement of commercial vessels.

In mid-June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum aimed at beginning negotiations toward a peace agreement. However, tensions escalated again about three weeks later, with the United States accusing Iran of attacks on commercial shipping in the strait.

The two countries subsequently resumed military strikes, while maritime traffic through the strategic passage remains halted.
