Iran Conditions, Trump Threats Cloud Crucial Islamabad Peace Talks
Tehran seeks ceasefire assurances and asset release, while Washington signals military action if deal fails
Iran, Apr 11 : Negotiations between Iran and the United States in Islamabad hang in the balance as both sides harden their positions ahead of the scheduled dialogue. Iranian representatives arrived for the talks but made it clear that discussions would only proceed if key preconditions are met, including a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of frozen financial assets.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump escalated tensions by warning of fresh military strikes if negotiations fail. His remarks have heightened uncertainty, casting doubt on whether the high-level engagement will proceed as planned.
Calling the talks decisive, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the moment as a critical turning point, stressing that the outcome could determine the path toward a lasting ceasefire.
A temporary truce announced earlier this week has paused hostilities, including US and Israeli air operations, but underlying tensions remain unresolved. Strategic concerns continue to revolve around the Strait of Hormuz, where disruptions have impacted global energy movement, and ongoing clashes involving Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Iranian parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Ghalibaf reiterated that previous US commitments such as easing financial restrictions and ensuring regional ceasefire arrangements must be honoured before negotiations begin. He is leading a large delegation alongside Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, reflecting the scale and importance of the talks.
From the US side, Vice President JD Vance is heading the delegation, expressing cautious optimism while warning against any attempts at strategic misrepresentation during discussions.
Meanwhile, tensions across West Asia persist. Fresh diplomatic engagements are expected in Washington, D.C. involving Israeli and Lebanese officials, though disagreements remain over whether ceasefire terms will be part of those talks.
Iran has also signalled broader demands, including sanctions relief and greater control over maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz. With both sides maintaining firm positions, the upcoming negotiations are poised to be a decisive moment in shaping regional stability and diplomatic outcomes.
