CHENNAI, Sept 7: East Zone captain Ishan Kishan produced a spectacular double-century in the Duleep Trophy final on Monday, smashing 270 to propel his side to a mammoth 708 against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
Kishan’s innings, spread across 334 deliveries, included 30 boundaries and seven sixes. His commanding display strengthened his credentials in red-ball cricket and once again brought attention to his ambitions of returning to the Test setup.
The wicketkeeper-batter formed a crucial 230-run partnership with Kumar Kushagra, who contributed 101. Their stand transformed East Zone’s position after the team had lost four wickets for 241 runs.
Kishan briefly left the field after suffering from cramps but returned to complete his imposing innings. He was eventually dismissed for 270, leaving East Zone firmly in control of the contest.
East Zone eventually crossed the 700-run mark and finished its first innings on 708. The huge total has placed considerable pressure on South Zone, which must produce a substantial batting effort to stay competitive in the final.
The knock also underlined Kishan’s development as a red-ball batter. His ability to combine attacking strokes with greater patience and discipline was particularly evident during the long innings.
At 28, Kishan remains an important option across formats, and his performance in Chennai has strengthened the case for greater consideration in India’s longer-format plans.
