DUBAI, Mar 27: Israel carried out a fresh wave of airstrikes on Iran early Friday, targeting sites in central Tehran as tensions escalated ahead of a scheduled United Nations Security Council meeting on attacks affecting civilian infrastructure. With diplomatic efforts showing little progress, the conflict appears poised for further escalation as it approaches its one-month mark.
Israeli officials had earlier signalled plans to expand operations against Iran’s weapons production network. While details of the latest targets remain unclear, the strikes underline a widening military campaign. Simultaneously, regional instability intensified as smoke was reported over Beirut and air raid sirens sounded across parts of Israel amid attempts to intercept incoming Iranian missiles.
Iran continued its retaliatory operations across the Gulf, with drones and missiles reportedly detected in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. The ongoing hostilities have raised fears of a broader regional spillover.
Efforts to broker peace remain stalled. The United States has proposed a 15-point ceasefire framework, urging Iran to return to negotiations. Diplomatic engagement continues at the international level, with the UN Security Council set to hold closed-door discussions following a request by Russia regarding alleged attacks on civilian infrastructure. The meeting comes amid mounting international pressure to de-escalate the crisis.
The human toll of the conflict continues to rise. Iranian authorities report over 1,900 fatalities, while casualties have also been recorded in Israel, Lebanon, Iraq, and other affected regions, highlighting the widespread impact of the ongoing war.
