IT Department Clarifies ITR Filing Deadline Remains September 15 Amid Extension Rumours
Amid claims of glitches and buzz over a further extension, department urges taxpayers to rely only on official updates
New Delhi, Sep 15: The Income Tax Department has clarified that the last date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2025-26 remains September 15, 2025, dismissing social media claims that the deadline has been extended to September 30.
In a late-night post on X on September 14, the department called the circulating statement “fake” and urged taxpayers to follow only official updates from @IncomeTaxIndia. “The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025,” it said.
The clarification came after a series of posts by chartered accountants and individuals alleging glitches on the e-filing portal while making tax payments and downloading the Annual Information Statement (AIS). Responding to these concerns, the department said, “The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try a different browser.”
The I-T department has also been assisting taxpayers directly on X, asking those facing issues with ITR uploads or tax payments to share details along with PAN and mobile number at orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in
. For AIS/TIS access issues, it directed users to email cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in
with mobile number and IP address details.
To ease compliance, the department said its helpdesk is operating 24×7, providing support through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions, and social media. As of September 13, over 6 crore ITRs had already been filed.
The filing date for AY 2025-26 was earlier extended from July 31 to September 15 due to revisions in ITR forms and related system upgrades. For AY 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore ITRs were filed by the original deadline, reflecting a 7.5% growth from the previous year.
