Jaishankar Calls for Dialogue and Diplomacy, Reiterates Zero Tolerance for Terrorism

During Bulgaria visit, External Affairs Minister highlights need for dialogue, resilient supply chains and stronger international cooperation amid global uncertainties.

SOFIA, Jun 11: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomatic engagement in resolving international disputes, asserting that military confrontations cannot offer lasting solutions to contemporary global challenges.

Speaking after talks with Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova-Chamova, Jaishankar said the world is currently navigating a period marked by geopolitical instability, economic uncertainty and persistent security threats, making international cooperation more important than ever.

The minister observed that several regions continue to grapple with armed conflicts and strategic tensions, creating an atmosphere of unpredictability. In such circumstances, he stressed that peaceful engagement remains the most effective path toward stability and conflict resolution.

Reaffirming India’s long-standing position on global disputes, Jaishankar said New Delhi believes negotiations and diplomatic efforts must take precedence over confrontation. He noted that sustainable peace can only emerge through constructive dialogue among stakeholders.

Addressing broader global concerns, the minister highlighted the challenges faced by developing nations, particularly in relation to energy availability, food security and access to agricultural inputs. He said India has consistently raised these issues on international platforms while representing the interests and concerns of countries in the Global South.

Jaishankar also pointed to the growing significance of economic resilience in an increasingly interconnected world. He emphasised the need to strengthen supply chains and diversify trade networks to minimise vulnerabilities arising from geopolitical disruptions and market uncertainties.

He further stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of international maritime routes, noting that uninterrupted sea-based trade remains vital for global commerce and economic stability. Any disruption to key shipping corridors, he said, can have far-reaching consequences for countries dependent on international trade.

Reflecting on lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the minister said the global health crisis demonstrated the necessity of deeper collaboration among nations. Enhanced cooperation in areas such as healthcare, technology and emergency response mechanisms remains essential to address future challenges effectively, he added.

On the issue of terrorism, Jaishankar called for a firm and unified international approach, asserting that there should be no ambiguity in confronting the threat. He reiterated India’s position that terrorism in all its forms must be rejected and addressed through collective global action.

According to the minister, discussions with the Bulgarian side revealed substantial convergence on key international issues, including security, economic cooperation and multilateral engagement. The two countries also exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Jaishankar’s visit forms part of his two-nation tour covering Bulgaria and Finland from June 10 to 11. The trip is aimed at deepening India’s engagement with European partners and exploring new opportunities for collaboration across trade, technology, innovation, connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.

India has steadily expanded its outreach across Europe in recent years, seeking stronger partnerships with both established and emerging economies. Diplomatic engagements such as the current visit reflect New Delhi’s broader strategy of enhancing cooperation with European nations while contributing to discussions on major global challenges.

The minister’s remarks come at a time when geopolitical tensions, economic disruptions and security concerns continue to shape international relations. By advocating diplomacy, resilient economic frameworks and a united stand against terrorism, India signalled its commitment to promoting stability and cooperative solutions in an increasingly complex global environment.
