Jaishankar Highlights Economic Security as Key Amid Global Uncertainties

External Affairs Minister stresses de-risking economies and resilient supply chains amid global uncertainties during 18th India-Japan Strategic Dialogue

India, Jan 16 : External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday highlighted the critical importance of economic security in today’s uncertain global environment, during the 18th India-Japan Strategic Dialogue with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi in New Delhi.

Jaishankar underlined India’s priority on its relationship with Japan, which has evolved over the past two decades into a broad, comprehensive, and strategic partnership. Initially centered on economic cooperation, the ties now extend across international forums such as the Quad, G4, and G20, and encompass shared strategic and geopolitical interests.

Referring to the shared Indo-Pacific vision, Jaishankar noted that former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe had laid the foundation for a free and open Indo-Pacific. “Our initiative, MAHASAGAR, aligns closely with Japan’s vision for the region,” he said.

He further emphasized that both nations, as leading democracies and major global economies, have not only an opportunity but also a duty to shape the international order. “Economic security today is particularly paramount. De-risking our own economies and the global economy, addressing resilient supply chains, critical minerals, energy, health, and maritime security are crucial priorities,” Jaishankar added.

Looking ahead, the minister highlighted the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan next year, expressing confidence that the partnership will continue to deepen. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation on economic, strategic, and global fronts.
