Jaishankar calls for stronger Global South unity, multilateralism, and UN reform at UNGA sidelines

New York, Sept 24: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday urged greater solidarity among Global South nations, a renewed commitment to multilateralism, and a collective push for reform of the United Nations and other global institutions. His remarks came at a High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Sharing insights on X, Jaishankar said that in the face of global challenges and multiple risks, “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.” He outlined five key proposals to strengthen the collective voice and influence of developing nations, emphasizing the need to leverage existing forums to enhance consultations, solidarity, and collaboration.

The minister highlighted areas where the Global South can contribute effectively, including vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agro-practices, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He also stressed the importance of equitable engagement on global challenges like climate action, climate justice, and emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to ensure developing nations are not left behind.

India continues to champion the Global South’s perspective in international forums, advocating for a meaningful role for developing countries in shaping the global agenda and reforms in multilateral institutions.
