Jaishankar urges urgent UN reforms, says organization reflects 1945 realities, not 2025

EAM stresses inclusivity, justice, and accountability in UN peacekeeping and calls for a modern, representative multilateral order

New Delhi, Oct 16 : External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar on Thursday called for urgent reforms at the United Nations, warning that the organisation continues to reflect the world of 1945 rather than the realities of 2025. Speaking at the United Nations Troop Contributing Countries Chiefs’ Conclave (UNTCC 2025) in New Delhi, he said the UN must evolve to remain relevant and credible in addressing global challenges.

“The United Nations today still reflects the realities of 1945, not of 2025. Eighty years is a long time, and UN membership has quadrupled over this period. Institutions that fail to adapt risk irrelevance and eroding legitimacy,” Jaishankar said. He warned that ongoing reform processes are sometimes being used to derail progress, allowing historical injustices to persist.

Highlighting India’s approach to peacekeeping, Jaishankar underscored the nation’s civilisational ethos, guided by the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam  “the world is one family.” He praised the contributions of UN peacekeepers, especially the 4,000 Indian troops who have sacrificed their lives in service of global peace, calling them “torchbearers of multilateralism.”

Jaishankar emphasized that modern challenges  from pandemics and terrorism to climate change and economic instability demand cooperative solutions. He called for UN mandates to be realistic, clear, and aligned with available resources, stressing that host states bear primary responsibility for civilian protection.

He also highlighted the role of technology in peacekeeping, asserting that India stands ready to enhance operational efficiency through innovation. Additionally, he stressed combating misinformation and ensuring the safety and accountability of peacekeepers.

“The UN must become more inclusive, democratic, participative, and representative of today’s world. Its credibility depends on amplifying the voices of the developing world and reflecting the aspirations of the rising Global South,” Jaishankar said.

The minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to a reformed UN and a strengthened multilateral order, urging global cooperation grounded in justice, dignity, and shared prosperity.
