COLOMBO, Aug 25: India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando have been fined 25% of their match fees following an on-field confrontation during the second Test in Colombo.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) imposed Level 1 sanctions on both players after they admitted to breaching Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to inappropriate physical contact between players.
Both cricketers were also handed one demerit point as a result of the incident.
The confrontation occurred during the opening day of the Test, with Jaiswal and Fernando involved in a heated exchange. The incident attracted attention during a match in which India were seeking to build on their 1-0 series advantage.
The disciplinary action means both players have accepted the sanctions without the matter requiring a more serious hearing.
The incident has also prompted criticism from former Indian cricketers, who questioned Jaiswal’s conduct and urged the young batter to maintain greater composure during international matches.
Despite the off-field attention surrounding the confrontation, Jaiswal remained an important part of India’s batting effort in Colombo.
India subsequently strengthened their position in the Test, with wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel producing a major innings and Rishabh Pant contributing a valuable half-century.
The penalties underline the ICC’s emphasis on maintaining discipline and preventing physical or inappropriate confrontations between players during international matches.
