JAMMU CHAMBER OUTLINES ROADMAP

The Jammu and Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCI) delegation has made a significant contribution by laying out a comprehensive roadmap aimed at addressing the region’s pressing economic and infrastructural challenges. Over the years, Jammu and Kashmir has faced a host of obstacles that have hindered its economic development. The delegation’s efforts in highlighting these critical issues—ranging from the hospitality sector and arms dealers to railway infrastructure and media representation—have brought much-needed attention to longstanding concerns that have long stymied the region’s progress. By bringing these matters to the forefront, the delegation has not only identified the core problems but also emphasized the urgent need for targeted policy interventions to resolve them.

The hospitality sector has been one of the key areas of concern raised by the CCI delegation. Hoteliers, particularly in regions such as Patnitop, have been facing undue harassment through investigations initiated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The delegation has consistently urged for these cases to be reviewed and resolved, advocating for a fair and transparent approach. Similarly, arms dealers in the region have long grappled with the challenges posed by the conversion of their licenses into Form VIII, a bureaucratic requirement that has effectively brought their operations to a halt. The delegation raised concerns regarding the sealing of premises and the potential economic fallout for these dealers. Their plea for swift action from the Union Home Secretary reflects a genuine effort to alleviate the difficulties faced by this sector, which plays a critical role in sustaining trade and commerce in Jammu and Kashmir. The need for a more streamlined and supportive regulatory framework is evident, and addressing this issue could provide a significant boost to the region’s industrial ecosystem. One of the most pressing issues identified by the CCI delegation is the urgent need for improved railway infrastructure in Jammu. The region’s strategic location demands better connectivity, and the establishment of a railway division has long been a key demand. By raising this matter, the delegation has underscored how better rail connectivity can foster economic growth by enhancing trade and industrial activity. President CCI emphasized that the establishment of a railway division would not only improve the movement of goods and people but also open new avenues for employment, especially for the youth. The delegation’s request for a comprehensive plan supported by adequate funding reflects the urgency of this demand and the region’s need for robust infrastructure development. Moreover, the proposal for a Rail coach repair factory in Jammu could play a vital role in supporting ancillary industries and creating local employment opportunities. This initiative, coupled with the demand for direct train service between Jammu and Prayagraj during the Maha Kumbh Mela, demonstrates the delegation’s vision of enhancing regional connectivity and boosting tourism. Facilitating more accessible travel options, particularly during major events like the Maha Kumbh Mela, Jammu and Kashmir can attract both pilgrims and leisure tourists, ultimately contributing to the region’s economic prosperity. Another key issue brought forward by the CCI delegation pertains to media representation. The delegation emphasized the need for a full-time Duggar Channel, akin to the Kashir Channel in Srinagar, to counter misinformation and promote the region’s rich cultural and developmental narratives. Currently, Jammu has only a part-time Dogri news channel, which limits the region’s ability to effectively communicate its unique concerns and achievements. The delegation argued that a dedicated Duggar Channel would serve as a powerful tool for regional identity and pride, helping to counter the negative propaganda that often emanates from external sources, particularly concerning Jammu and Kashmir. The delegation’s discussions with the Union Minister for Railway, Information Broadcasting, and Tourism further underscored the need to address the potential adverse impacts of increased railway connectivity to Srinagar and Baramulla on Jammu’s economy. Recognizing the region’s historical significance and the sacrifices made by leaders like Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, the delegation proposed a statue of unity-like project in Jammu, aimed at boosting tourism and fostering economic development. This vision reflects the delegation’s understanding that economic development in Jammu and Kashmir must be holistic, encompassing both infrastructure and cultural identity. The CCI delegation’s efforts have helped highlight the pressing need for a balanced approach to development, ensuring that Jammu does not get overshadowed by the focus on other regions. By advocating for the proper development of Surinsar and Mansar lakes, the delegation has sought to transform these areas into major tourist attractions capable of driving both pilgrimage and leisure tourism.

By raising concerns related to the hospitality sector, arms dealers, railway infrastructure, and media representation, the delegation has set the stage for focused policy interventions. The assurances made by Union Ministers in response to these issues represent a positive step toward resolving long-standing challenges, paving the way for sustainable development in Jammu and Kashmir. With continued efforts and follow-up, there is reason to believe that the region will witness meaningful progress in trade, tourism, and infrastructure, contributing to economic prosperity for all stakeholders. Finally, the Jammu Chamber of Commerce & Industry has demonstrated exemplary leadership in addressing Jammu and Kashmir’s critical economic and infrastructural challenges. Their proactive approach, visionary roadmap, and tireless advocacy reflect a deep commitment to regional growth and prosperity. By championing diverse sectors and fostering meaningful dialogue, the Chamber remains a beacon of hope for transformative progress.
