Jammu Double-Murder Case Cracked: Police Arrest Man Who Assisted Elderly Couple with Household Chores

JAMMU, Sept 18: A man has been arrested in Jammu for the alleged murder of an elderly couple four days ago, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh, confirmed on Wednesday. The accused, Deepak Singh, alias “Sonu,” had been known to the victims for over eight years and had no prior criminal record.

The couple, Sanjay Chandaill, a retired principal, and his wife Veena Devi, were found dead at their residence in Patta Chungi Udheywala, Bohri, on the outskirts of Jammu city on September 14. According to the SSP, Sonu had been helping the couple with household chores and knew the family well. He was reportedly in desperate need of money and planned the murders to rob the family.

The SSP said that Sonu, a resident of Talab Tillo, had disappeared from his home on September 3, prompting his wife to file a missing person’s report on September 9. Sonu returned home briefly on September 12, forcibly took Rs 5,000 from his wife, and vanished again.

Investigations revealed that Sonu acted alone in carrying out the crime. CCTV footage played a crucial role in solving the case, as it helped trace Sonu’s movements. The police urged residents to expand their CCTV coverage to public areas, especially main roads, to enhance security and aid in future investigations.

The couple had been living alone after their daughters relocated outside Jammu and Kashmir a few months ago, which made them vulnerable. The arrest brings closure to a crime that shocked the local community.
