Union Minister pledges housing, employment, and financial support to flood-hit communities in RS Pura

New Delhi : Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on Friday visited the flood affected border village of Badyal Brahmana in RS Pura, Jammu, and unveiled a series of relief measures aimed at supporting affected families and farmers.

Chouhan announced the construction of 5,101 houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) for displaced families. He also stated that Rs 76 crore would be released for women self-help groups in the region, and employment under MGNREGA would be increased from 100 to 150 days in the affected areas.

During his visit, the Minister assessed the damage to standing crops and interacted with a large gathering of flood victims. Assuring them of the Central government’s support under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he emphasized that all possible assistance would be extended after consultation with the Jammu and Kashmir government, which is submitting detailed damage assessment reports.

Teams from the Ministries of Home Affairs, Jal Shakti, Rural Development, and Agriculture have already surveyed the affected areas and will provide recommendations for relief measures. Chouhan further announced that one instalment under the PM-Kisan scheme would be released immediately for flood-affected farmers, and compensation would be provided for domestic animals lost during the floods.

Under the PM-Awas scheme, each household will receive Rs 1.3 lakh for house construction, along with additional provisions for toilets. He also urged farmers to utilize the sand deposited in fields by the floods and requested the J&K Mining Department to relax rules to aid affected families.

Chouhan added that the J&K government currently has Rs 2,499 crore available under disaster management funds for flood relief, and the Centre would provide additional support if required. Renovation of damaged canals and embankments will also be undertaken with Central assistance to restore infrastructure.

The comprehensive package aims to provide immediate relief, rebuild homes, support livelihoods, and strengthen resilience against future floods in Jammu.
