Jammu & Kashmir Drafts New Media Policy to Reshape Digital Journalism & Advertisement Guidelines

J&K Govt Set to Regulate Digital Media with New Policy for Social Platforms, News Portals & Websites

Jammu, March 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has announced that it is in the process of formulating a comprehensive media policy aimed at regulating and empaneling emerging digital platforms, including social media, news web portals, and independent news websites.

Responding to a cut motion raised by Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para in the legislative assembly, the government clarified that the upcoming policy seeks to align with the dynamic digital media landscape while maintaining compliance with the standards prescribed by the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), Government of India. The new framework is expected to streamline advertisement allocations and establish a structured mechanism for accrediting digital media entities.

Regarding concerns surrounding the Srinagar Press Club, the government stated that the premises were vacated due to internal disputes among its members. The Estates Department had initially provided the space at Press Enclave, Srinagar, but following the disputes, it was taken over by the Jammu & Kashmir Police on a temporary basis.

Further, the government clarified that the registration process of the Kashmir Press Club remains on hold as it awaits clearance from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). However, it confirmed that another entity, the Press Club of Kashmir, has been officially registered by the Department of Industries and Commerce.

The new media policy is expected to redefine the government’s engagement with digital media, ensuring transparency and equal opportunities in advertisement distribution while fostering a structured and accountable digital news ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.
