Jammu Police Crack Down on Impersonators Threatening Citizen, Uncover Fake Police Officers

Jammu, 03-10-2023 : In a significant development, the Jammu Police have apprehended two individuals masquerading as police officers, with one impersonating an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and the other as an Inspector. The arrest took place at a hotel located in the Jewel area of Jammu.

The incident came to light when a complaint was filed at the Nowabad Police Station by an individual who reported being threatened by the duo posing as law enforcement officers. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Jammu, Chandan Kohli, confirmed the arrests and provided details of the case.

According to the victim’s complaint, he had initially connected with a person named Kaiser Jeelani through a social networking site. Mr. Jeelani had presented himself as an IPS officer, and they struck up a friendship. Eventually, they decided to meet in person at the Green Mint Gumat Hotel near the Fish Market in Jammu.

Upon entering the hotel room, the victim was shocked to find Kaiser Jeelani accompanied by another individual dressed in a police uniform adorned with stars, who claimed to be an Inspector. The impersonators proceeded to threaten the victim, demanding that he hand over his laptop. The victim endured harassment and was further menaced with the threat of physical harm, including the possibility of being killed.

In response to the complaint, the Nowabad Police Station registered a case under FIR number 166/2023, citing sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 384 (extortion), 170 (personating a public servant), and 171 (wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). An immediate investigation into the matter was launched.

A specialized police team from the Nowabad Police Station, led by SP Kulbir Handa and DySP HQrs Dr. Sunniya Wani, with the assistance of SHO PS Nowabad Surinder Raina, exerted strenuous efforts to track down and apprehend the accused. Eventually, they successfully arrested the two individuals at the aforementioned location.

The arrested individuals were identified as Kaiser Shahnawaz Mir, a resident of Danger Pora in Baramulla, and Mohd Tanveer alias Arif Wani, a resident of Sopore in Baramulla. The police have stated that further investigation into the case is ongoing as they seek to uncover the full extent of the impersonation and any potential underlying motives or activities of the accused individuals.
