Jammu Police seize 631 vehicles in major crackdown on illegal mining, fines near ₹1 crore imposed

Satwari tops illegal mining seizures as police intensify action across Jammu district

Jammu, Jan 7: Jammu Police seized as many as 631 vehicles involved in illegal mining activities during the past year and imposed fines amounting to nearly ₹1 crore, officials said on Wednesday, highlighting a sustained and intensified drive against the unlawful extraction of natural resources.

Reaffirming the force’s firm stance, Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu, Joginder Singh, said that Jammu Police will continue to follow a zero-tolerance policy against illegal mining and ensure strict action against violators without any exception. He warned that such activities not only cause serious environmental degradation but also result in substantial loss to public revenue and damage to vital public infrastructure.

Detailing the enforcement measures, the SSP said that police teams across Jammu district have significantly stepped up checks and surveillance, particularly in vulnerable mining zones, to curb organised and repeated violations. The focus, he added, has been on deterrence through consistent action and intelligence-based operations.

Police officials revealed that out of the 631 vehicles seized in connection with illegal mining, 572 were released during 2025 after the completion of statutory formalities. They added that fines totalling ₹99,85,327 were imposed on violators over the year, reflecting the scale of the crackdown.

Among police stations, Satwari recorded the highest enforcement action with 202 vehicles seized, followed by Akhnoor with 73 seizures and Domana with 65. Officials said areas identified as vulnerable to illegal mining witnessed more seizures based on specific intelligence inputs and ground assessments.

Police further stated that vehicles repeatedly found involved in illegal mining have been placed under close monitoring, and additional legal proceedings are being initiated as per law to prevent recurrence of such offences. The police reiterated their resolve to protect natural resources and maintain strict vigilance to ensure compliance with mining and environmental regulations across the district.
