Jio Platforms Opens Record $3.2 Billion IPO as Indian Markets Gain

Reliance Industries' digital subsidiary seeks a valuation of up to $108.3 billion, with strong institutional interest setting the stage for one of India's most closely watched market listings.

MUMBAI, Oct 21: Jio Platforms opened its initial public offering (IPO) for public subscription on Wednesday, launching a record $3.2 billion share sale that is expected to test investor appetite for India’s technology and telecommunications businesses.

The offering marks the first public share sale from billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries group in two decades and could value Jio Platforms at up to $108.3 billion. The company is seeking to raise approximately Rs 30,200 crore through the issue, making it India’s largest IPO to date.

The public offering comes at a time when investors are closely examining company valuations, corporate earnings and the outlook for technology businesses. Strong demand from institutional investors before the launch has raised expectations, although broader participation will determine the eventual success of the issue.

Jio Platforms has set a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share. The subscription window is scheduled to remain open until October 23, with trading expected to begin on October 28.

The company operates India’s largest telecommunications business, with more than 500 million subscribers. Its expansion has reshaped the country’s mobile market since the launch of Reliance Jio in 2016, when low-cost data plans and free voice calls accelerated internet adoption.

The business has since expanded beyond mobile connectivity into broadband, digital entertainment, enterprise networking, cloud computing and artificial intelligence-related services.

The scale of its subscriber base and its digital infrastructure has attracted international investors, including Meta Platforms and Google, alongside major institutional funds.

Before the public issue opened, Jio Platforms attracted substantial interest from institutional investors. The anchor-investor portion reportedly received bids exceeding $25 billion, highlighting the scale of demand for the shares allocated to large investors.

The company allotted shares worth approximately Rs 8,109.85 crore to 212 anchor investors at the upper end of the price band. Participants included prominent global asset managers and financial institutions.

However, strong demand in the anchor book does not guarantee a similar response from retail investors. The public subscription period will provide a clearer indication of whether individual investors are prepared to participate at the proposed valuation.

The offering has also drawn attention because of its potential influence on India’s primary capital market. A successful listing could strengthen confidence among companies preparing to raise funds and demonstrate the capacity of domestic markets to accommodate very large technology and telecom transactions.

Jio Platforms reported approximately $3.2 billion in profit on revenue of around $15.5 billion for the financial year ended March 2026. Telecommunications accounted for the overwhelming majority of those figures, underscoring the importance of its core connectivity business.

The company is seeking to build on that foundation by developing additional digital services and increasing the value generated from its existing customer base.

One major question for investors is whether Jio can sustain growth as India’s telecom market becomes more mature. Subscriber expansion has been central to its rise, but future earnings will also depend on average revenue per user, service pricing, customer retention and the adoption of higher-value digital products.

The company’s substantial investments in network infrastructure have helped it establish a nationwide presence. Monetising that infrastructure through enterprise solutions, cloud services and new digital offerings could provide further opportunities, although such initiatives will require continued investment and effective execution.

The IPO is also significant for Reliance Industries, which has spent years preparing the digital subsidiary for a public listing. The offering provides an opportunity for investors to gain direct exposure to Jio Platforms rather than relying solely on their holdings in the parent conglomerate.

At the same time, the proposed valuation places considerable attention on the company’s future earnings growth. Investors will need to assess whether revenue from new services can expand sufficiently to justify the market value assigned to the business.

Indian equity markets opened higher on Wednesday as investors responded to corporate earnings and the launch of the public offering. The Nifty 50 rose 0.78% to 23,066.55, while the BSE Sensex gained 0.86% to 74,488.6 as of 9:20 am IST, according to market data reported by Reuters.

Information technology shares led the early gains, with the sectoral index rising 2.2%. L&T Technology Services advanced 10.5% after reporting stronger revenue and profit for the September quarter. Reliance Industries also drew attention as investors focused on the Jio listing.

All 16 major sectoral indices recorded gains at the market opening, although broader small-cap and mid-cap indices were little changed. The initial rise reflected improved sentiment, but market direction remained vulnerable to corporate earnings, oil prices and global developments.

The IPO arrives against a complicated international backdrop. Higher crude oil prices can increase India’s import bill and create inflationary pressure, while uncertainty in global markets can affect foreign investment flows and risk appetite.

For Jio Platforms, the immediate test is to convert institutional enthusiasm into broad demand during the public bidding period. The eventual listing performance will offer another indication of how investors value large Indian technology companies amid changing global preferences.

The company’s established subscriber base, digital infrastructure and backing from major strategic investors provide important strengths. Nevertheless, sustaining growth will require continued investment, stronger monetisation and the ability to compete in a rapidly evolving digital economy.

The offering is therefore more than a fundraising exercise for Reliance Industries. It represents a major test of investor confidence in India’s technology sector and the market’s willingness to support a large-scale listing at a valuation exceeding $100 billion.

The level of public subscription, subsequent trading performance and Jio Platforms’ ability to expand beyond its core telecom operations will be key factors shaping the longer-term assessment of the listing.
