Jammu, 20-10-2021: The Government has declared Kalij Pheasant as bird of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. An order in this regard has been issued by the Department of Forest, Ecology, and Environment after the approval of the Lieutenant Governor. Kalij Pheasant with the scientific name “Lophura leucomelanos” is an Indian pheasant found in forests and thickets, especially in the region of the Himalayan foothills. It is widely found particularly in Mansar, Surinsar, Jasrota, and Bhaderwah areas.
Erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state had the black-necked crane and Kashmir stag (Hangul) as its state bird and animal respectively.
