Electoral Roll Revamp in Jammu & Kashmir: ECI Targets August 20 Completion Ahead of Assembly Polls
JAMMU, Jun 21: In preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated a special summary revision of the electoral rolls in the Union Territory. This exercise, aimed at ensuring the most accurate and inclusive voter list, is set to be completed by August 20.
The ECI has also directed similar revisions in three other states scheduled for elections later this year. According to the communique sent to the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu & Kashmir, this initiative is in accordance with Section 21(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, which stipulates that electoral rolls must be updated prior to each general election to the Legislative Assembly of a state. The goal is to maximize the registration of all eligible citizens, particularly those turning 18 on or before July 1, 2024, and to enhance the overall integrity of the electoral roll. Consequently, the ECI has decided to conduct a second summary revision of photo electoral rolls with July 1, 2024, as the qualifying date.
Similar instructions have been sent to the Chief Electoral Officers of Maharashtra, Haryana, and Jharkhand, where elections are also due this year. The revision exercise will commence on July 25 and conclude on August 20. Preceding this, pre-revision activities will be carried out in Jammu & Kashmir and the three other states from June 25 to July 24.
It is worth noting that last year, the Supreme Court directed the ECI to hold Assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir by September 30. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that preparations for the Assembly polls in Jammu & Kashmir have begun. He emphasized the significance of local representation and expressed optimism about the future of the region.
“The people of Jammu & Kashmir elect their representatives at the local level, finding ways to solve problems through them. Therefore, now the preparations for the Assembly elections have also started. The time is not far when you will elect the new government of Jammu & Kashmir with your votes. That day will also come soon when Jammu & Kashmir will once again make its future better as a state,” he stated.
