J&K: Fresh Gunfight Erupts in Kishtwar District

Renewed gunfight in Singhpora forests follows Sunday’s operation one soldier killed, seven injured

Jammu, Jan 22: A fresh encounter erupted on Thursday between security forces and militants hiding in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials said.

The renewed contact occurred in the dense forests of Singhpora during an ongoing search operation that began Sunday in Sonnar village near Mandral-Singhpora in the Chatroo belt. Sunday’s operation had resulted in the death of one paratrooper and injuries to seven others.

Officials said heavy firing between the forces and the militants was ongoing at the time of the latest reports, with efforts continuing to neutralise the armed group.

Earlier, a major terrorist hideout was uncovered near the encounter site on Monday, and several individuals were taken in for questioning. Intelligence indicates that two to three militants, reportedly affiliated with the Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), remain trapped in the area.

Security agencies are maintaining a tight cordon and conducting a methodical clearance operation to ensure the militants are either apprehended or neutralised.
