J&K Government Issues Warning to Officers Over Delays in Filing Court Appeals
Departments told to adhere to limitation periods amid concern over delayed legal references
JAMMU, Feb 14: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has instructed all government departments to strictly comply with statutory timelines while filing appeals and other court matters, cautioning that repeated delays are undermining the government’s legal position.
The directive follows observations that several cases were being forwarded to the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs after the expiry of prescribed limitation periods. Such lapses, officials noted, have resulted in hurried submissions, weakly drafted applications seeking condonation of delay, and, in some instances, outright dismissal of cases on technical grounds.
Emphasising accountability, the government stressed that appeals, writ petitions, Letters Patent Appeals (LPAs) and Special Leave Petitions (SLPs) must be processed and filed within the stipulated timeframe. Departments have been asked to streamline internal procedures to prevent procedural lapses and safeguard the state’s interests in ongoing litigation.
