J&K Installs Over 12.3 Lakh Smart Meters, Govt Pushes Power Reforms
Jammu and Srinagar record the highest numbers as the government accelerates efforts to modernise power distribution and curb losses.
Jammu, Feb 11: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has installed over 12.36 lakh smart electricity meters across the Union Territory as part of ongoing power sector reforms, the Legislative Assembly was informed on Wednesday.
The figures were provided by the Power Development Department (PDD) in a written response to a query raised by legislator Waheed-Ur-Rehman Para. The rollout is being implemented under the Prime Minister’s Development Package (PMDP) and the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), with REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited serving as the nodal agency.
District-wise data shows that the Jammu division accounts for 6,27,492 installations, with Jammu district topping the list at 3,04,468 meters. Samba and Kathua follow with 58,707 and 57,320 installations, respectively.
In the Kashmir division, 6,09,015 smart meters have been deployed. Srinagar leads with 2,39,147 units, while Baramulla and Anantnag have recorded 87,732 and 77,943 installations.
Additionally, the department reported the installation of 1,600 smart feeder meters on 11kV feeders across ten districts in the Jammu division to enhance monitoring of electricity flow.
Responding to concerns about quality, the PDD stated that all devices comply with standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
The smart metering drive forms part of a nationwide initiative designed to strengthen billing accuracy, improve operational efficiency, and reduce aggregate technical and commercial losses in the power distribution network.
