J&K Requires Major Special Package to Overcome Longstanding Setbacks: Dy CM Surinder Choudhary
Deputy Chief Minister emphasizes state-level financial support to tackle unemployment, flood damage, and sectoral losses
Jammu, Feb 2: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Monday said that Jammu and Kashmir, despite being a Union Territory, requires support comparable to that of a full fledged state, and the upcoming budget will incorporate a special package tailored to the region’s long standing needs.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Choudhary highlighted the challenges the Union Territory has faced over the past decade, including rising unemployment, natural disasters, and setbacks in key sectors such as tourism.
“Our needs are those of Jammu and Kashmir. Although we are a Union Territory, the budget will address requirements at the state level. A special package will be announced to revive sectors affected by floods, security operations, and the decline in tourism after incidents like Pahalgam,” he said.
Choudhary stressed that unemployment has surged over the last 11 years, with several economic sectors requiring urgent support. “To bring these sectors back on track, Jammu and Kashmir needs a substantial special package,” he added.
When asked about the Chief Minister’s recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Choudhary said discussions remain confidential. “Matters discussed inside are under oath of secrecy and remain limited to the room,” he noted.
He assured the public that the full details of the budget, including the special package, would be disclosed once it is presented. “As soon as the budget is unveiled, everything will be in the public domain,” Choudhary said.
