JKNC Confident of Statehood Restoration in Upcoming Budget Session, Urges Centre to Fulfill Promises
SRINAGAR, Jan 30: Senior National Conference (NC) leader and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Tanvir Sadiq expressed optimism that the long-pending demand for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood would be addressed in the upcoming Budget session of Parliament. Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Sadiq, who also serves as the party’s chief spokesperson, reiterated that the existing dual power structure has weakened institutions and created governance challenges.
“People came out in large numbers to vote with great expectations. They now want their elected representatives to function effectively and deliver on their promises. However, the presence of a dual power system hinders governance. That is why we have been consistently advocating for the immediate restoration of statehood. We sincerely hope this matter will be taken up and resolved in the forthcoming Budget session,” he said.
Sadiq emphasized that the return of statehood would help address many challenges faced by the people of Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring greater accountability and administrative efficiency. He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address in Sonmarg, where the PM assured the people of fulfilling commitments made to them.
“We appreciate the Prime Minister’s statement in Sonmarg. Now, with the Budget session approaching, we expect him to honor his words. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are eagerly awaiting action on this promise,” he added.
When asked about NC’s course of action if statehood is not restored, Sadiq responded that confrontation with the Centre was not necessary at this stage. “The Prime Minister and the Home Ministry have made commitments, and even the Supreme Court is aware of this issue. The Prime Minister himself, during his Sonmarg visit, stated that ‘Modi’s promises are not false.’ So why should we assume a confrontational approach? We trust that the government will fulfill its commitment, and we are hopeful that the upcoming Parliamentary session will include a significant mention of statehood restoration,” he asserted.
Addressing the adoption of the Joint Parliamentary Committee’s report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Sadiq cautioned against any interference in the management of Waqf properties. “The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) enjoys a majority, but it must recognize and respect the deep sentiments associated with Waqf institutions. Any attempt to alter its management structure should be carefully reconsidered. Our Member of Parliament, Aga Ruhulla, will strongly voice concerns over this bill when it is tabled for discussion in Parliament,” he assured.
The National Conference remains firm in its demand for full statehood restoration and the protection of Jammu and Kashmir’s special institutions, urging the Centre to uphold its commitments and act in the best interest of the people.
